The Trend Report: -Core Edition

In the last issue of the Trend Report, I discussed the mainstream fashion trends that are gaining a huge following with Gen Z, primarily thanks to TikTok and social media. Movements like Old Money aesthetic, Vanilla Girl, and Quiet Luxury are great for summer/springtime, or for the girls who want to embody that feeling year-round. However, for our more alternative and fearless fashion followers, “core trends” like Mermaidcore, Cottagecore, Royalcore, and Fairycore may be more appealing. Each of these TikTok fashion movements has a whimsical and feminine foundation to them and is inspired by childhood stories or fantasies.

Mermaidcore has spiked in popularity in recent months because Disney released their live-action remake of the classic, “Ariel”, starring actress and vocalist Halle Bailey. This aesthetic is characterized by pearl accents, seashells, sequins, and semi-sheer or lace fabrics to make the clothes appear soaked.

The wave of Cottagecore hit during Covid, when everyone was on lockdown at home, and remains a favorite style in the TikTok community. At this time, there were several period dramas released (like Bridgerton) that only amplified the public desire to experience the Cottagecore aesthetic. This wave is characterized by romantic nostalgia, florals, vintage patterns, and rustic accessories.

Similar to Cottagecore, in that it has a rustic and romantic influence, Royalcore is a niche spin-off trend that has become recently popular among Gen Z. A key difference between Royalcore and Cottagecore is elegance and extravagance. Cottagecore could be worn at a hillside picnic or on a farm. Royalcore is more about decadence and feeling like a modern-day princess, this includes wearing more elaborate jewelry like rubies and richer fabrics like velvet or satin. Royalcore aesthetic also applies to home decor and was inspired by both “Bridgerton” and “The Crown”.

Fairycore is another soft aesthetic rooted in fantasy and idealism. The majority of the attributes found in Fairycore outfits are inspired by nature, Disney movies (Peter Pan), and a revival of love for the childhood Nickelodeon show, Winx Club (featuring fairy princesses). Specific pieces often seen in Fairycore outfits are soft pastels, wings, sparkles/glitter, butterflies, woodsy colors, and unorthodox fabrics.

Have you tried any of these trending core aesthetics? Send me an inspo pic!
